The Malta Film Opus is more than a book, it is a lasting film legacy. For over a century, Malta has served as the backdrop to hundreds of productions, from blockbuster franchises to period dramas. With its rich history, dramatic landscapes, and world-class local talent, Malta has become a magnet for the world’s most visionary directors.
Karl Fowler, CEO of OPUS, said:
“We are honoured to partner with the Malta Film Commission to create the very first OPUS dedicated to film. Malta’s rich cinematic legacy and breathtaking locations have left an incredible mark on some of the greatest films ever made. The Malta Film Opus will be a celebration of artistry, collaboration, and the timeless stories brought to life on this extraordinary island.”
Johann Grech, Malta Film Commissioner, said:
“This isn’t just a book, it is Malta’s story told through film. For over 100 years, our country has welcomed the world’s greatest filmmakers, and today we celebrate the Maltese talent and landscapes that made it all possible. The Malta Film Opus marks a legacy – and a future – built on excellence, vision, and pride in who we are: We Are Film.”
From Robert Altman’s Popeye and Steven Spielberg’s Munich to Ridley Scott’s Gladiator films and the Jurassic World franchise, Malta has consistently delivered unforgettable film moments. The country’s unmatched combination of skilled crews, reliable weather, diverse scenery, and world class water SFX facilities has positioned it as one of the most versatile filming destinations in the world.
The Malta Film Opus will showcase 100 defining moments in Malta’s cinematic history through powerful imagery, archival materials, and exclusive interviews with directors, actors, producers, and local film professionals. The volume will explore how Malta evolved from a scenic backdrop to a global player in the film industry, while inspiring future generations of filmmakers and storytellers.
This will be the first OPUS in history dedicated entirely to the world of film, a testament to Malta’s extraordinary role in shaping the cinematic landscape.
