Mosaic
Artist Genna Wise created an inspiring one-off work of art for the Official Journey to Makkah Opus that represents the incredible pilgrimage to Makkah through mosaic.
The Holy Ka’bah has a powerful symbolic and deeply spiritual meaning, not just to the millions of people travelling to Makkah to perform the Hajj, but to the hundreds of millions of Muslims around the world. When Genna was commissioned, it was important to her that she create something extraordinary for this project.
Working initially with small pieces of opaque glass, known as Smalti, Genna created the mosaic through a painstaking process of constant revision and improvement over two months.
The final piece integrates millefiori, tiles, glass beads, jewellery and an array of assorted, colourful and textured objects. This rich multitude of textures urges its viewers to reach out and touch the artwork.
